자그마한 정원이나 화초라도 가꾸어 본 경험이 있는 사람이라면 알 것이다. 꽃과 식물의 시간은 우리의 시간보다 빠르다. 독일의 대문호 헤르만 헤세(Hermann Hesse)는 “정원에서는 모든 생명의 짧은 순환을 다른 어디에서보다 더 가까이에서, 더 명확하게, 더 선명하게 볼 수 있다”고 말한 바 있다. 손정민 작가가 그림을 대하는 태도와 방식도 이와 다르지 않다. 작가가 하루하루 그려 나간 그림에는 자신의 일상과 주변 사람들에 대한 애정 어린 시선과 따스한 제스처가 담겨있다.

 

이번 전시는 마음속 어딘가에 늘 자리했던 지난 일상의 흔적과 시간을 ‘지금’, ‘여기’, 그리고 미래의 어느 한순간에 살아있는 기억으로 되살린 20점의 작품들로 구성된다. 전시 제목인 “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.”라는 표현은 미국 여류작가 거트루드 스타인(Gertrude Stein)이 1913년에 쓴 시 「Sacred Emily」에 나왔던 것으로, ‘장미는 그 존재 자체로 존재한다’는 의미를 지닌다. 그렇기에 본 전시에는 소개된 작품들 역시 그림 그 자체가 전하는 순수하고 평온하며 다정한 인상과 감각 그대로가 관람자들에게 전달되기를 바란다.

 

프랑스 후기 인상주의 화가였던 세잔(Paul Cézanne)은 자연은 끊임없이 변하기 때문에 쉬지 않고 계속 그림을 그려야 한다고 말한 바 있다. 봄 햇살에 기지개를 켜며 고개를 내미는 작은 풀들과 매일매일 빛과 향기를 점차 달리해가는 꽃, 바람에 흔들리는 나뭇가지 등 자연의 모든 것은 끊임없이 그 모습을 달리해간다. 손정민이 그리는 풍경과 사물 그리고 사람들은 마치 정원사가 매일매일 밭과 정원을 가꾸고 관찰하면서 새로이 발견하고 깨닫게 되는 그런 가치들이다. 그렇기에 그의 작품에는 세세하게 마음 쓰며 관찰하며 자신만의 정원을 가꾸는 듯한 소소한 일상에서 비롯된 내면의 진솔함, 성실함이 있다. 그것이 바로 손정민의 작품 속 지극히 사적인 대상들에게 우리의 마음이 매혹되는 이유다.

 

For those who have nurtured a garden or cared for plants, it’s evident that the rhythm of time in nature moves more swiftly than our own. The esteemed German writer Hermann Hesse once remarked, “In the garden, you can watch all lives going through their short cycles more closely, clearly, and distinctly than anywhere else.” This perspective is intricately reflected in the work of artist Son JungMin, who approaches her art with a warm, contemplative gaze, capturing the quiet beauty of her surroundings and the people in her life through her daily drawings.

 

This exhibition showcases 20 of Son JungMin’s works, each a vivid manifestation of memories, moments, and the quiet passage of time. These pieces, rooted in the past, transform into living memories of the present and glimmers of the future. The title, “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,” borrowed from Gertrude Stein’s 1913 poem Sacred Emily, emphasizes the simplicity of existence—that “a rose exists as it is.” True to this spirit, the works in this exhibition exude purity, tranquility, and gentleness, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in their serene impressions and sensations.

 

Paul Cézanne, the influential French Post-Impressionist, believed that nature is in a state of constant transformation, requiring the artist’s tireless attention to capture its essence. Son JungMin’s landscapes, objects, and figures echo this philosophy, embodying the small but profound changes observed in daily life: grass stretching toward spring sunlight, flowers shifting in light and fragrance, and branches swaying with the breeze. Like a gardener tending to each detail of their garden, Son JungMin’s work reveals sincerity and dedication, capturing those fleeting, intimate moments that resonate universally.
