"Stay weird, stay different." 지난 2015년 아카데미 시상식에서 시나리오 작가인 그레이엄 무어(Graham Moore)가 남긴 이 짧 은 문장은 남들과 다르다는 이유로 스스로를 위축시켰던 이들에게 깊은 위로와 용기를 주었다. 오늘 날 우리는 겉으로 다양성을 존중한다고 말하지만, 여전히 익숙함과 낯섦의 경계에서 타인을 재단하 고 판단하곤 한다. 이번 Seoul Auction X에서 소개하는 이혜수(Hyesu Lee) 작가는 바로 이러한 경 계 너머의 세상을 그려내며, ‘다름’의 내러티브를 전하는 작업을 해오고 있다.

뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 이혜수 작가는 일러스트레이터이자 만화가, 벽화가로, 『It’s Nice That』, 『The Lilu』, 『Fast Company』, 『Design Sponge』 등 다양한 매체에 작품을 소개하며 주목받았다. 특히 올해 발간했던 그녀의 에세이 『셀프 러브 클럽(Self-Love Club)』은 소 소한 일상 속 자기 돌봄과 사랑의 메시지를 유쾌하게 전하며 많은 이들의 공감을 얻었다. 현재 작가 는 School of Visual Arts와 Parsons School of Design, Fashion Institute of Technology 등에서 강의를 통해서도 그녀만의 독특한 시각과 철학을 전하며, 전방위적 활동을 해오고 있다.

이번 국내 첫 개인전 는 작가가 일상에서 발견한 진솔한 감정과 생각을 경쾌한 색감 과 독특한 캐릭터로 풀어낸 작품들로 구성되었다. “It’s OK to Have a Bad Day”, “Be Kind to Your Mind”와 같은 그림 속 메시지는 우리가 팍팍하고 고단한 현실에서 마주치는 부정적 감정을 환기시 키는 동시에 따뜻하게 보듬으며, 보는 이가 자신만의 경험을 투영하도록 유도한다. 또한 동글동글한 형태와 밝고 따스한 색감의 귀엽고 사랑스러운 이미지들은 우리에게 세상이 그리 나쁘지 않다는 안 도감을 준다. 이는 단순히 어린아이와 같은 순진함이 아닌, 자신만의 정체성을 찾고 수많은 고민과 성찰을 통해 다져진 내면의 목소리라고 할 수 있다.

“조금 이상해도 괜찮아.”, “그게 바로 너니까.”라는 따뜻하고 유쾌한 그녀의 메시지는 이번 전시를 통 해 여전히 완벽하지 않으면 스스로를 탓하는 일이 일상적인 오늘을 살아가는 모든 이들에게, 불완전 함 속에서도 자신만의 세계와 진정성을 찾아가는 기회가 되기를 바란다.

While we often claim to celebrate diversity, we still find ourselves constrained by the boundaries of familiarity and unfamiliarity, judging others within these limits. At Seoul Auction X, artist Hyesu Lee invites us to look beyond these boundaries, crafting narratives that celebrate the beauty of individuality and difference.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Hyesu Lee is an illustrator, cartoonist, and muralist whose work has appeared in publications such as It’s Nice That, The Lilu, Fast Company, and Design Sponge. Her 2024 essay, Self-Love Club, resonated with many for its cheerful and relatable messages of self-care and self-love, drawn from the quiet moments of everyday life. Alongside her art, Lee extends her perspective through teaching at institutions like the School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design, and the Fashion Institute of Technology, sharing her unique vision and philosophy

Her first solo exhibition in Korea, Stay Weird, is a celebration of emotions and thoughts discovered in the rhythms of daily life, expressed through vibrant colors and imaginative characters. Messages like “It’s OK to Have a Bad Day” and “Be Kind to Your Mind” invite viewers to confront their own negative emotions while embracing them with warmth and compassion, creating space for self-reflection and connection.

The playful, rounded forms and bright, welcoming hues in her work offer a sense of ease, reminding us that the world still holds moments of charm and delight.
