자연의 모든 것은 한순간도 쉬지 않고 생성, 성장, 소멸을 반복하며 변화해 간다. 대자연의 순환 가운데 이러한 변화와 반복은 그 자체로 미완이면서도, 동시에 생(生)의 완성을 지향한다. 서체적 추상화로 국내외적으로 독보적 위치를 점하고 있는 오수환 작가(b.1946)는 지난 50여 년간 매일매일 수십 장의 드로잉 작업을 통해 무념무상의 상태에서 자신의 몸에 각인된 자연의 질서를 거침없이 휘두르는 일필휘지의 흔적을 통해 화폭에 담아 왔다. 그의 획(劃)은 힘 있게 솟구치며 위로 뻗어가다가도 갑자기 완만한 물결의 흐름을 타듯 떠다니고, 바람에 흩날리듯 흩어진다. 20세기 초반 독일의 미술사학자인 빌헬름 보링거(Wilhelm Worringer)는 ‘회화란 인간이 무한한 공간과 상호작용하는 도구’라고 언급한 바 있는데, 오수환의 추상은 바로 자연의 거대한 순환의 수레바퀴 가운데 만나게 되는 생(生)의 에너지 흐름과 닮아 있다. 본 전시에서 소개하는 오수환의 최근작 <대화(對話, Dialogue)> 시리즈는 그 어떤 사물의 모습이나 풍경을 연상시키지 않기에 외려 하늘과 땅, 물과 바람과 같은 자연의 근원적 상태에 대해 생각하게 한다. 바로 이러한 점은 구상과 추상의 이분법적 구도 아래 추상을 정의하고자 했던 서구와 다른 점이다. 이번 전시를 통해 자연에 내재된 질서와 본질을 발견하고자 하는 한국적 추상의 미학에 조금 더 가까워지는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

Everything in nature is in a constant state of flux, creating, growing, and dying. These changes andrepetitions in nature's cycle are incomplete in themselves, but at the same time, they aim for thecompletion of life. Oh Sufan (b. 1946), who is recognized both domestically and internationally forhis stylistic abstraction, has been creating dozens of drawings every day for the past 50 years,capturing the order of nature imprinted on his body through the traces of his pen, which he wieldsin a state of mindlessness. His strokes surge upward with power, then suddenly float in a gentleundulation and scatter in the wind.In the early 20th century, Wilhelm Worringer, a German art historian, said that 'painting is a tool forhumans to interact with infinite space,' and Oh's abstractions resemble the flow of vital energy innature's great cycle of life. Oh's recent Dialogue series, presented in this exhibition, does notresemble any objects or landscapes but makes us think about the fundamental state of nature, suchas sky and earth, water, and wind. This differs from the West, which has tried to define abstractionunder the dichotomy of figuration and abstraction. Through this exhibition, we hope to bring youcloser to the Korean aesthetic of abstraction, which seeks to discover the order and essence inherentin nature.
