프랑스 사상가 미셸 푸코의 에피스테메는 지난 몇 년간 이사라 작가 작업의 중축이 된 주제이다. 역사와 사회는 우리의 무의식 위에 세워진 구조라는 이 논제를 예술의 범주로 확장하면, 역사적인 명작들에 등장하는 ‘고등한 존재'와 ‘열등한 것’들은 누가 어떻게 구분하는지, 그 권력은 누구에게서 오는지, 또 현세대는 과연 지난날 억압을 통해 부를 취했던 권력의 구조에서 벗어났는지와 같은 질문들로 이어질 수 있다. 힘을 위한 열망은 진정으로 해체될 수 있을지, 아니, 그 전에 우리는 그 욕망에서 진심으로 해방되길 바라는지와 같은 본질적인 물음을 던지게 한다.

이런 사회적 통제와 개인의 자유를 향한 열망은 프랑스 낭만주의에서 깊게 다뤄진 부분이다. 전통주의와 규범의 굴레를 벗어던지고 흐드러진 표현들로 가득 찬 시대. 이 모습은 하루가 멀다하고 새로운 것을 추구하면서도, 그 혼돈 속에서 각자의 주체성을 찾으려는 현대인에게도 완연한 양상이다.이렇게 프랑스 낭만주의 역사와 현대, 고전적 이미지와 현시적 시각, 체계와 해방, 이상과 현실 사이의 상호작용을 깊이 파고드는 이사라 작가는, 본 전시 <The Red and The Blue>를 통해 우리의 의식 속에 깊이 뿌리박힌 시스템과 신념을 성찰하게 한다. 자유로워 보이지만 치밀하게 구조화된 제스처로 고전을 해체하고 재맥락화해, 역사적 통념이 현세대에게 지속적으로 미치는 영향을 조명하고자 한 것이다.  다채로운 색조는 이를 위한 그녀의 가장 큰 무기이다. 각 색깔이 가진 고유한 파장을 이용해 그동안 빛을 발하지 못한 부분을 부각하기도 하고, 서둘러 눈길을 돌리고 싶게 만들기도 하며 관객의 시선을 연주하는 이사라 작가는, 체계적인 구조 위에 본능적인 변주를 얹어 우리의 무의식을 형상화한다. 소용돌이치는 혼란 속에서도 자아와 본질을 찾아가려는 현 사회의 모습이 이 화려한 스펙트럼 안에서 다각도로 비치길 바라며 말이다.

Sarah Lee's work has long been anchored in the philosophical discourse of Michel Foucault's "episteme," which asserts that history and society are structures built upon the unconscious. This idea, when extended into the realm of art, prompts a series of probing questions like 'What distinguishes the "superior" and the "inferior" as illustrated in historical masterpieces?' 'Who wields the power to draw these lines?' and 'Have we, as a contemporary society, truly liberated ourselves from the traditional power structures that exalted wealth from systems of oppression?' Through these queries, we ask if the desire for power can ever be dismantled or, more provocatively, if we even sincerely wish to be free of that desire. These inevitable dynamics of social control and the individual's yearning for freedom resonate deeply with the themes explored by French Romanticism—a period that broke free from the shackles of tradition and rigid norms, embracing unbridled expression. This historical moment echoes the modern human condition, where the relentless pursuit of the new is coupled with a chaotic and desperate search for personal identity.

In her exhibition <The Red and The Blue>, Sarah Lee delves into this intricate interplay between the historical and the contemporary, the classical and the immediate, structure and liberation, idealism and reality. Through her work, she invites us to reflect on the deeply ingrained systems and beliefs within our consciousness. By deconstructing and recontextualizing the classics with gestures that appear liberating yet are meticulously structured, she seeks to illuminate the continuing influence of historical conventions on the present. Color is her most potent weapon in this endeavor. Harnessing the unique resonances of each hue, Lee highlights the overlooked or compels the viewer to shift their gaze, orchestrating the audience's attention. She visualizes our unconsciousness by overlaying instinctive improvisation onto systematic structures in this vibrant spectrum, leading us to reflect on the multifaceted nature of our current society—one caught in the swirl of chaos yet ceaselessly searching for the original self.
